Start Taking Care of Your Skin

How often do you really take care of your face? Our daily usage of foundation, powder, and other sort of make-up effect skin negatively causing it to look dry, gloomy. Our skin needs vitamins and caring as much as the rest of our body.

Number one solution is, of course, drinking plenty of water and washing your face every night removing the dirt that gathered throughout the day. Another solution is to use facial mask once a week to give that right nutrition and treatment to your skin. Using a facial mask every Sunday night has become my routine. It does not have to be on a Sunday night, of course. However, it’s easy because it is the end of the week and you want to start your new week with bright, healthier skin. My routine is take a shower, get everything for the next day, and put on my face mask. By using face mask once a week, your skin gets the essential vitamins and nutrition for the week. As a result, you have a glowing, healthy skin.

There are many types of facial masks. I’ve tried many facial masks and found that TonyMoly brand facial masks are so far the best masks I have tried. You also may try different brands to see which ones you like the best. Here is my favorite TonyMoly Pureness100 that has nine different ingredients:

Light blue (hydrating), snail (skin damage care), honey (skin soothing), purple (elasticity), caviar (nutrition), pearl (brightening), coconut (moisturizing), green (strengthening skin barrier).

Model Street Style: Behati Prinsloo

Looking just as amazing in her laidback street clothes as the designer frocks she wears on the runway. This leggy beauty can be spotted strolling the streets of trendy LA or New York's East Village, wearing what can only be described as boho, rocker grunge. The Namibian Victoria’s Secret model is usually sporting distressed leather and worn in boots with her ever present ray bans. Prinsloo who says she loves Rodarte and Alexander Wang has perfected the “I don’t care about how I look, yet still I always look amazing” thing.

As if her effortless style wasn’t enough to make you worship her, Miss. Prinsloo can glam it up too. The black form fitting Emilio Pucci dress with the sexy sheer side panels at the 2014 amfAR Gala, anyone?

If you want to dress like the soon to be Mrs. Levine, you’re in luck because she collaborated on a line with Los Angeles based denim company, THVM, that is set to drop next week. For all the girls out there who love leather and vintage concert tee’s, Behati Prinsloo is your new style icon.

Now that you’re obsessed with Behati Prinsloo, here’s how to get Behati’s look.

Best Dressed: Oscar's 2014

While watching the 2014 Oscars Red Carpet coverage, I found it hard to contain my excitement regarding the evening’s fashion. Although the majority of the awards show was nothing short of predictable (Jennifer Lawrence falls and everyone laughs at her “quirkiness,” Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t win an Oscar, again…and Ellen Degeneres was arguably the best Oscars host in history – I mean come on, she got Brad Pitt to serve pizza and orchestrated a selfie of the century that crashed twitter), I was thoroughly impressed with the large amount of dresses I was obsessed with. Usually, I fall in love with four or five looks on the red carpet. However, I had an extremely difficult time narrowing my best dressed look to fifteen outfits; ten females, and five males. A big trend of the night was pale shades of pink, nudes, and whites for women; the bow tie was a big hit among the men walking the carpet.  And did anyone notice that Pharrell wore shorts? Props to him for trying something different. Check out my best dressed list (in order) below:

1. Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Reem Acra
2. Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab
3. Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace
4. Lupita Nyong'o in Prada (she helped design this dress – how cool is that?)
5. Emma Watson in Vera Wang
6. Maria Menounos in Johanna Johnson
7. Sarah Paulson in Elie Saab
8. Amy Adams in Gucci
9. Ireland Baldwin in Burberry
10. Cate Blanchett in Giorgio Armani
1. Michael B. Jordan in Givenchy (THE SHOES!)
2. Jason Sudeikis in Prada
3. Jared Leto in Saint Laurent (his ombre is prettier than mine)
4. Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Calvin Klein
5. Kevin Spacey in Burberry

How to Style Hunter Boots

I love shoes. When it comes to topping off your outfit, jewelry, jackets, scarves and headbands (to name a few) are always great additions but, in my opinion, there is no accessory more important than what your feet bring to your destination.

With March here, the snow is beginning to melt and we feel those slight raises in temperature that feel warmer than they actually are. Even though the snow is melting, come March there is one aspect standing between us fashionistas and the colorful wedges, the leather sandals and funky Toms we are longing to strap on our freshly manicured feet: the long and rainy month of April.

In most cases, rain can be a downer on the fashionista’s day but there is one solution to make splashing through puddles in your fabulous outfit fun again: rain boots. Yes, indeed you might be thinking, why would I put on ugly, yellow rubber boots with my extraordinary outfit, but let me give you some tips and tricks to looking fabulous in rain boots.

Hunter boots and top hats. Yes! You can pull it off. It is the day after a huge rainstorm and the temperatures have cooled down a bit leaving huge puddles wherever you walk on your way to class and the dark clouds make you want to leave the bright colors in your closet.  It’s a day for blending in but still keeping your fashionista status. So pull out your favorite dark wash skinny denim and a comfortable grey tee. Pair your simple look with dark green Hunter’s and a black top hat to hide your messy do and some sunglasses. Before you leave your building, throw on a neutral colored jacket to keep you warm from the wind and your favorite pair of leather gloves. If you have time, I always enjoy the simplest pop of color to top off an outfit, so add red nail color for some sass.

Rain boots are perfect for expressing yourself. They are colorful and sold in many different styles. So for that cloudy, cold April day where most people will stay inside make it a point to throw on a colorful pair of rain boots on your way to class, grabbing coffee with your best gal pal or stepping out of the taxi to run errands downtown. Style up your black leggings with an oversized crème sweater to keep you warm and knee high cherry red Hunter’s for your first pop of color. Accessorize your outfit with a large leather tote for your books or purchases, a light gold or silver bracelet to extenuate your wrist or a funky phone case for when you keep in touch with your buds and add some nude color to your lips. Lastly, if your walking from class to class, from the taxi to the coffee shop or strolling down Michigan Avenue I doubt you’ll want the rain to ruin your perfect do so add an umbrella of your choice to give you that city girl chic look.

For a weekend day out on the town and a nice dinner date, I always prefer a classy look.  So go all out with a maroon colored pair of jeans and a thin beige leather belt to accessorize. Take a risk with a “different” pair of rain boots. My personal favorite has two clasps and a cute felt pattern covering the back of the boot. Add some cute socks to draw attention to the shoe. To add that little bit of “sexy” for your night out with your best man, wear a silky spaghetti strap black top to keep his eyes glued to you and a cardigan or light jean blouse that you can take off throughout your date. He will adore it.  Accessorize with rose jewelry like a dainty watch and earrings, a black clutch, some sunglasses and a vest in case it gets colder at night than you expected.

Towards the end of April we still experience those light showers but the sun feels warm on our faces and lets us look forward to the summer that is knocking on the door. So, start to move those heavy sweaters to the back of your closet and pull forward your favorite shorts and light tights. Throw on a light sweater and some colorful knee high socks with your styling rain boots. Trade out your tote bags and clutches for an adorable backpack to show off your studious side. Accessorize with your favorite bracelet and some dangly earrings. To show off your earrings, try putting your hair into a bun or a messy up do and let your skin absorb that Vitamin D it missed so much over the long, colorless and cold winter.

There you have it, simple inspirations to making the rainy weather a bit more tolerable.  In no time summer should be here.

British Invasion, Student Edition: James Lelliot

I think that I speak for most people when I say that British fashion is on point. But in all honesty, the men’s fashion intrigues me just as much—sometimes even more—than the woman’s fashion does. There is something very refreshing about a man who really cares about his appearance, and British men definitely do. Here in the States, your usual guy roles out of bed, throws on a sports t-shirt, a pair of sweatpants, and heads out the door. So clearly as an American girl, I am very please to see a guy who really takes the time to look good.

Leah and I had the opportunity to interview James Lelliot, an international student from Brighton, a town on the Southern coast of Great Britain. We thought it would be interesting to gain some insight on how American fashion differs from the United Kingdom, and just how he feels about it all.

DBD: “What would you say your personal style is?”
James: “I like to dress smart. I like to dress up more formal. I also take my time to get ready in the morning, and when I am going out.”

Queue British men's fashion advertisement below:

DBD: “What are some similarities between Men’s Fashion in the U.S. and the U.K.?”
James: “We have similar stores. For example, TopMan and Urban Outfitters. Some guys in England wear sports jerseys, but sometimes they don’t actually know what team they are for. A lot of guys wear vans and skinny jeans as well. There is also a lot of North Face, Abercrombie, and Hollister clothing.”

DBD: “What are some differences between Men’s Fashion in the U.S and the U.K?”
James: “I think that English guys try a lot harder when they go out. We like to look good, not only in the clothing that we wear, but in our hygiene as well. I think that English Fashion is more individual and diverse, whereas in America a lot of people dress very similar to each other. Men wear scarves more often in the U.K., and as less of a way to keep themselves warm, but as a fashion statement. I also button my shirts all the way up, and I don’t understand why American men leave the top few buttons open. A lot of guys in England like to shop at boutiques and designer stores as well.”

DBD: “What is your biggest American Fashion pet peeve?”

James: “I don’t like baseball caps on boys or girls, or overly baggy, low jeans. I also don’t really like the ‘frat’ look.”

DBD: “Have you started any new fashion trends with your friends here because of your difference in style?”
James: “I wear these boots which are a bit more formal, and one of my friends asked where I got them, so I went to Topman with him and he bought himself a pair. Some friends have also started wearing skinny jeans, and tucking their shirts in like me.”

DBD: “Are there any American Fashion trends that you have adopted?”
James: “I have started to dress more casual. In England, I would dress up more for class, whereas here, I wear DePaul Apparel a lot of the time. I like to hang out in more casual clothes now too. When I went home for Winter Break, my friends were telling me that I have started to wear more casual clothing. I also got my ears pierced here; it is definitely more of an American thing for a guy to have his ears pierced.”

The casual American male:

So there you have it, an insightful look into the mind of a very fashionable British guy. Whether you prefer the socks and boat shoes combination of a frat boy or a collared shirt buttoned all the way up like the charming British lads on campus, there’s every kind of men’s fashion here at DePaul!

Ultimate Icon: Audrey Hepburn

I can’t even begin to explain how much I idolize Audrey Hepburn. She is my ultimate icon in fashion, beauty, and personality. I may or may not own two Audrey Hepburn calendars, a planner, and a giant poster… Okay, I do. As one of the greatest actresses of all time she exuded class and beauty something I strive to do myself. She was born in Brussels, Belgium, but moved all around Europe growing up resulting in her becoming fluent in English, Dutch, French, Spanish, and Italian.

At the age of 5, she began her ballet career and studied ballet in London at the Ballet Rambert. She also did some modeling to pay for her schooling, but when deciding on a career path, her height and nutrition held her back from becoming a prima ballerina, so she pursued acting. Before being cast in her breakout role as Princess Ann in Roman Holiday, she did theatre and received several small roles in movies.

Her role in Roman Holiday led to her Academy Award for Best Actress in 1953 increasing her fame and popularity. She went on to star in the movie Sabrina and the Broadway musical Ondine, where she won a Tony Award for Best Performance as a Leading Actress in a Play. Other big performances of the time were in War and Peace, Funny Face, and Love in the Afternoon. Her career soon became a balance of movies, musicals, and fashion.

In 1960, Hepburn starred in her most remembered movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, as Holly Golightly. This became her defining role by establishing her class and sophistication in fashion with the unforgettable little black dresses in the movie. The dress in the beginning of the movie is known to be the most iconic dress in film history. It wasn’t long before Audrey Hepburn was a fashion icon in the Golden Age of film. Her costuming was done in most movies by Givenchy, her favorite designer. Givenchy is credited to forming Audrey’s elegant style, but eventually she became the muse for many of his designs. Audrey had a beautiful feminine style that oozed elegance and sophistication and that style is a common goal for women today. She was awarded and recognized for her style in the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1961.

She went on to play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady in the stage musical. Although she was not nominated for an Academy Award, her performance had rave reviews. After her final projects, she decided to devote more of her time to her family, specifically her two sons from two separate marriages, and acted less. Her first husband, Mel Ferrer, died of heart failure which led to Hepburn’s remarriage to Andrea Dotti.

Out of the many reasons I love Audrey Hepburn, her inspiring humanitarian work proves to be the biggest. She worked with UNICEF and was appointed Goodwill Ambassador. George H. W. Bush presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and she was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award after she died from appendicular cancer in 1993. Now there is even a U.S. Fund for UNICEF in her honor “The Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund.” She has left quite a legacy since her death being named the third greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute. She is one of the few actresses who has won Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Academy Awards. Through her career and life Audrey carried herself with dignity, elegance, and grace, and for that she will always be remembered. As she said herself, “elegance is the only beauty that never fades.”
