Live Life Colorfully!

Living in the city, we see black on black on black, maybe a pop of grey. I know that personally I have a vast closet of different shades of black (with the exception of some blue jeans), but with spring coming soon I made a vow to myself that I would brighten up my life with some color in my wardrobe. From my experience, I can never feel sad when I’m in a yellow summer dress.

And can we discuss the recent weather in the negative thirties?! I need some happiness in my wardrobe to offset the sadness that I feel walking through the wind chill. In the spring, I can easily change my wardrobe to mimic the weather, but how do we achieve this in the winter? We don’t want to be wearing neon and standing out in the blizzard while everyone else is in dark shades, unless that floats your boat of course. So below I have compiled pieces that I love to “live more colorfully.”

And for all the black clothing lovers, like myself, I have created an inspiration outfit fitting for our winter times that brings in color with urban style.

It can take some time to incorporate color, even though psychologically it has been proven that color has a positive influence on our moods. So take a chance, wear that pink lipstick, slip on those blue velvet flats, and wrap that green scarf on your neck. Not only will it refresh your mood, but it might just help brighten people’s day while we walk on that ugly grey slush.

Messy and Chic

Let me start off by saying that for 90% of my 18 years of existence, I have had long hair that has been only several inches above my belly button. As a child, strangers would stop my mother and I in the grocery store to compliment me on my hair. I still rock my long locks to this day and I have to say, I'm getting quite bored of them. I think in a few months it may be time to chop and donate my hair while I opt for a medium length, messy and chic bob that lets my hair brush against my shoulders.

In the collage above, you can see that celebrities and models alike have worn this hairstyle and it works beautifully. It's easy to take care of and works curly, wavy, or straight very well. Not to mention it looks gorgeous in rich, golden brown tones. Jessica Alba's (middle right picture) is my personal favorite.

The hairstyle also transitions into the workplace perfectly. It looks great worn out at night with the ladies or to your job which is something I find very important. My long hair is a lot to keep up with and I feel as though it makes me look younger than I am.

My other favorite celebrity (and idol) to wear this style is the lovely Olivia Palermo. It looks utterly stunning on her and I could only hope and pray I pull it off as well as her!

Will you make a bold move to cut or dye your hair for spring coming?

Dungaree Love

Source

Since March 2013, I have been a Dungaree hoarder.
Overalls. Dungarees. Denim Onesies. Whatever you call them, they’re fabulous. I originally thought that such a look could only be pulled off by farmers or small children, but boy was I wrong. I have a small obsession with both Topshop and Eleanor Calder (I’m going somewhere with this, I promise). During Topshop’s 2013 show for spring, I noticed that the outfit Eleanor was wearing was, in fact, fancy overalls.

Source
My first thought was that obviously when you’re Eleanor Calder you can pull off any outfit with ease. However, as I sifted through my daily dosage of fashion-related blogs, magazine articles, and Instagram accounts, I noticed that more and more people were wearing overalls of all colors, patterns, shapes, and fabrics. I loved it.

I am happy to say that I am currently a proud owner of six different styles of dungarees and I wear them with confidence. Not only are they some of the most comfortable things in my closet, but they’re incredibly convenient and fashionable. I secretly hope that one day Eleanor Calder and I will run into each other wearing matching overalls and become best friends. Until that happens, you’ll see me roaming around DePaul University’s campus in my favorite pair of denim dungarees.

Student Spotlight: Jack Klein

Looking for a brand new, edgy, and hip fashion line local to Chicago? Well stop right now because we have found an up and coming line designed by a fellow DePaul student! Freshman, Jack Klein, co-founded Higher Ground Apparel with a high school friend in June, have together released their clothing online. Meghan, Sara, and I had the pleasure to interview Jack on his new clothing line.

DBD:   “It must be nice to be in Chicago to begin your fashion line. What have you taken from this?"

Jack:    “Yeah definitely. It’s been a learning process though. These past 3 weeks we’ve messed up on pretty much everything possible, which is good so we won’t make those mistakes again.”

DBD:   “How would you describe your style?”

Jack:    “I’m not into flashy styles. I like more simple designs and black sweatshirts or darker colors in general.”

DBD:   “How successful was your first release? How did you go about promoting it?”

Jack:    “It was good. Well, we could have done better to promote it, but mainly through social media. Now we just need to spread the word better.”

DBD:   “The look of your clothing seems to be edgy and hip, yet simple. How do you go about the process of design?”

Jack:    “We need to consider the design a lot more in our changes because even though I thought they looked sick they just weren’t all the way there. We’re realizing it’s more about design than anything.”

DBD:   “So in the upcoming line you are exploring creatively as well?”

Jack:    “Yes. It’s all a learning process and we have a long way to go, but it’s exciting.”

DBD:   “How did you get the idea to start the company?”

Jack:    “Well it was my friend’s idea originally and we just did it for fun. It started out as just a clothing company, but I want it to be more. The brand Higher Ground should stand for ambition since that’s what we had in creating it. So when you wear our stuff it’s a reminder to do what you want to do.”

DBD:   “Any ideas up for the upcoming seasons, how will you change the look?”

Jack:    “Yeah t-shirts, tank tops, different kinds of hats backpacks. We both sew, so we can always do something different with that. I don’t know, it’s hard to personalize everything.”

DBD:   “It is hard to do everything you want at once though, so where will you go from here?”

Jack:    “It was starting out to be just fun, but it became a little overwhelming by ourselves. We’re looking to add someone to help us especially with the printing because it can all get to be too much, so we can focus on the fun aspect. I mean, it’s not like we’re trying to make a living out of it, so we don’t need to focus on making it huge.”

DBD:   “Is this something you want to pursue full-time eventually?”

Jack:    “For now, it’s just a huge passion, but eventually it might be cool to do this full-time.”

Designed by DePaul is thrilled to work with Higher Ground Apparel in the future, so be ready for some more collaboration. The editors have already talked with Jack about possible PR stunts around campus and a small fashion show! So with the endless possibilities we want to wish Jack and Higher Ground Apparel good luck on their next clothing release. The Council of Fashion Designers of America and Bloomingdale's teamed up with 48 elite designers to create helmets that "put the fantasy in football." You can even bid on your favorite until February 4th. Here are my picks and their respective designers.

Finding a Concert Outfit

Do you ever have trouble finding the perfect concert outfit? If you struggle with this, you’re definitely not alone! We all know that concerts aren’t only a chance to see an awesome artist perform live, in the flesh, but they're also an opportunity that you hope will be worthy enough to post about on Instagram. If you’re anything like me, you realize that finding the ideal outfit for a show can be, well, pretty much impossible. I consider myself an avid concert attendee and an obsessive freak over music, so here are my tips on how to rock the perfect look for every concert under the sun.

Rock:

The 1975

Finding an outfit that can be wearable in at a rock concert can be tough. It’s hot and noisy and stuffy and there’s always that one person who is trying to push their way through to the front. Black is a very versatile color and can be worn with practically anything. Right now, I’m very into the flannel and leather jacket combination. You can always take off the flannel and tie it around your waist if you’re getting too hot, and the look still works perfectly. A loose white t-shirt still looks great under the jacket. A nice pair of combat boots (Doc Martens are my favorite) can complete the punk look and are sturdy enough to kick someone if they’re trying to start a mosh pit with you (it happens). An edgy wristlet works well so you don’t have to deal with carrying a bag the entire show.

Pop:

Pop concert

Dressing for a pop concert can be difficult, because people will either show up ridiculously decked out in concert merch and big signs to hold up (We’ve all been there – do you remember the Jonas Brothers?!) or dressed to impress. I prefer the latter. I enjoy this look because it’s very easy to create. The blouse is casual enough so it doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard, but it’s also nicer than a basic t-shirt. The ankle boots complete the look and are comfortable enough to jam out in for a few hours. If it’s cold outside, a black leather jacket or blazer can work perfectly!

Festival:

festival

With festival season right around the corner (okay, so maybe a few more months, but I’m already planning), any girl knows that the outfit is just as important as the music. However, can we collectively agree to stop wearing flower crowns?! It’s embarrassing to admit the amount of time I spent picking out 3 different outfits for Lollapalooza last year. Big festivals across the country like Coachella (Indio, California), Lollapalooza (Chicago, Illinois), and Bonnaroo (Manchester, Tennessee), are often heavily covered by numerous fashion blogs across the country. These three looks are very different, but also very easy to wear.

Look One: a basic black cropped shirt with high waisted jean shorts, typical but classic. High top converse or any pair of gym shoes (Keds or Vans work too!) are functional but still stylish. Sunglasses are a necessity in the sunny weather, so black wayfarers work perfectly with this outfit.

Look Two: Am I the only person still obsessed with maxi skirts?! This look is perfect for the hippie vibe, and I am extremely envious of anyone who can rock a floppy hat. The outfit is almost entirely black, but a splash of color on top balances it out pretty well. This outfit is definitely flattering to every body type, so that’s a big plus.

Look Three: Recently, I’ve been really into patterned shorts. I really like this pair because they’re not too revealing but are still super cute and fun to wear. The white shirt can either be worn tucked in to the shorts or loose over the shorts. A pair of beige or tan sandals works with the shorts and are casual but still look good with the rest of the look.
